Flag of Kyiv

The Flag of Kyiv was approved by the Kyiv City Council on 25 May 1995, at the behest of the then head of the Kyiv City Council of People's Deputies Leonid Kosakovsky. On 27 May 1995, the flag was first raised solemnly above the main entrance to the Kyiv City Council. The flag of 1995 looks like an azure piece of fabric. The patron Saint of Kyiv Archangel Michael who holds a flaming sword in his right hand and an oval shield with a cross on it in his left, is depicted on the flag. The flag panel has a yellow border.

The coat of arms of Kyiv features the Archangel Michael officially named as "Saint Michael the Archistrategos" (archistrategos, chief-general in the Ancient Greece), wielding a flaming sword and a shield on an azure field.
The coat of arms traces its history back to the medieval principality of Kievan Rus', where the Archangel Michael was depicted on the seals used by the Kievan grand princes. In the 16th century, a coat consisting of the Archangel Michael clad in white robes, holding a sword and a shield on a red field was adopted for the Kyiv Voivodeship.

Kyiv has held a contest to select a new logo. After a public appeal, ten entries were selected and put up to an online vote. That is the logo that got the most votes. It features four blobs in different colours, all representing different aspects of the city:
- A blue drop for the Dnipro River, which runs through the city;
- A green chestnut for Kyiv's parks;
- A yellow dome for the temples;
- A red heart characterising Kyiv as a city where there is love and goodness. It also resembles the wings of Michael the Archangel, who is depicted in the city's coat of arms.

The name Kyiv is said to derive from the name of Kiy (also Kyi), one of four legendary founders of the city (brothers Kiy, Shchek, Khoryv, and sister Lybid). Kyiv is situated on the picturesque banks of the Dnieper river. It is one of the most beautiful cities of Europe. One half of Kyiv's territory is occupied by parks and gardens. One of the biggest cities of Europe, Kyiv has a population of 3,14 million and occupies an area of more than 840 square kilometres.

The development of Ukrainian economy gave impulse to business activity of the city. There are a lot of new office centers, banks, trade exhibition centers and other commercial enterprises appearing in the city nowadays.

Kyiv is known as the most green city. The area of the green zone covers 43,600 hectares (making up 168 sq.m per one resident), more than half of which is taken up by woods, public gardens, two botanical gardens, parks and tree-lined boulevards. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009 Kyiv was the only CIS city to have been inscribed into the TOP30 European Green City Index.

Kyiv is served by a good transportation network. Trunk railways and all-weather roads link Kyiv to Kharkiv and the Donets Basin, southern and western Ukraine, and Poland. Within Kyiv city itself there is efficient subway, rail, and bus service. The Dnipro River is navigable about nine months of the year, and Kyiv’s Boryspil airport operates flights to other Ukrainian cities and to cities in Europe, Asia, and North America.
